Joseph Hartmann 2017 Humanitarian Award

Joe Hartmann receiving his award from President Tom Haas

Legendary South Jersey baseball coach Joseph Hartmann has been named recipient of the 8th annual South Jersey Hot Stovers Baseball Club’s Humanitarian Award.

It will be presented on Saturday, Nov. 25 at 2 p.m. during the South Jersey Hot Stovers 58th annual Baseball Awards Dinner at The Estate at Monroe, 351North Black Horse Pike, Williamstown

Hartmann – known throughout the region as Mister Baseball –   along with the South Jersey Baseball Coaches Association (SJBCA), have donated more than  $25,000 to the Walter Reed Society. Hartmann founded the SJBCA nearly 50 years ago and has served as its long-time treasurer.

The Association sponsors the Joe Hartmann Diamond Classic, which enters its 47th year in May. He also founded the Philadelphia Phillies-sponsored Carpenter Cup Classic named after former Philadelphia Phillies’ owners Bob and Ruly Carpenter. The tournament consists of high school baseball all-stars from the Philadelphia-region. It was first played in 1986.

Hartmann has been instrumental in the conception and administration of the New Jersey Scholastic Coaches Association (NJSCA) All-Star Baseball game that began in 1978.

The long-time head baseball coach at Eastern Regional High School, Hartmann played four years of baseball at Haddonfield and started the baseball and football programs at Cherry Hill High School East. He also played on the first baseball team at Rutgers-Camden. As an area scout for Tampa Bay, he may have been the first to notice a Millville seventh grader. Back then, he alerted the Rays to “keep an eye on 13-year-old Mike Trout.” The rest – as they say – is history.

Hartman has served as president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer for the NJSCA and has been inducted into Haddonfield High School, Eastern High School, South Jersey Baseball, Camden County and NJSCA Halls of Fame.

Previous Hot Stover Humanitarian honorees are: Lou Marshall, For Tots Programs; Matt Szczur, Be the Match; Will George, Scouting for a Cure; Anna Haas, Deptford American Legion Post 424; Suarez Family, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia; Andrew Bailey, Strike 3 Foundation; and David Montgomery, Phillies Charities.
